Toronto City Council voted 33-7 to endorse the Vienna Declaration on Thursday, raising a loud voice against the war on drugs.

“The war against drugs has failed,” said city councillor Kyle Rae, who brought the declaration to council after attending the AIDS 2010 international conference this July, where it was announced. “In every jurisdiction and in every community, we know that policing this issue is not enough.”

“We know, using the U.S. as a case study, that about $2.5-trillion has been spent trying to reduce the supply of drugs in the States. Despite that effort, drugs are more freely and easily available than they have been at any time in our history,” Dr. Wood said. “The purity has gone up, the price has gone down. Basically, every indicator shows that the problem is getting worse. Huge sums of money have been spent on tough-on-drugs approaches like our being proposed by our federal government.”

Portugal decriminalized drug use ten years ago and today has the lowest rate of cannabis use in the EU and lower overdose and HIV infection rates.

Holland, which has famously lax drug laws, has a lower marijuana consumption rate than Canada, Dr. Wood said.

With the federal governments move towards a U.S style drug war, what a breath of fresh air it is to see that Toronto doesn’t agree. It’s almost like in the U.S where the states are fighting the Feds to get their pot decriminalized or legalized. Great news!
“It is easier to earn fear than respect. That was what the US government relied on to enforce its Marijuana Tax Act. Samuel R. Caldwell was the unfortunate farmer that had to be sacrificed in order for the populace to abide by the 1937 Act. Caldwell was ill-fated enough to have his life ripped apart and never put back together just for a political agenda that served mainly narrow personal gains. Samuel R. Caldwell was the second person to be arrested according to the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. He was taken into custody the exact same day the Act was put into action.”

Matt Mernagh, known for his activism and being raided for his personal medical grow offers some solutions to Toronto’s ever growing medical pot struggle. Here is a couple quotes from his article in NOW magazine in Toronto.

“Three weeks ago, there was yet another police raid on Cannabis as Legal Medicine (CALM). Why should the thousands of T.O. residents who rely on medicinal pot have to endure this insecurity?”

“After 15 years of community service, compassion clubs are growing in number, but coexistence with police can’t be relied upon. Time to ask Toronto Public Health to be the buffer between med green clinics and law enforcers.”

“After all, clubs operate in a smoky area of case law. Most follow an unwritten code of conduct to ensure that the people they sell meds to are legitimately ill. Keeping out pothead posers is key to their survival, because undercover cops are kept out, too.”

“So instead of police raids, Toronto Public Health could develop and enforce compassion club standards, protecting operators and clientele. It’s inspectors we need, not police. Why not a compassion club protection bylaw?”

This year brought the destruction of the Gulf in the U.S, the greedy oil empire has landed a huge blow to ecosystems, animal and human life for decades. Finally the world is beginning to notice. There is no reason to use oil to power our economy other than greed, lies and the fascist power of corporations that are in bed with our governments. We don’t need to re haul our safety standards, we don’t need to add more restrictions to drilling for oil, it must simply stop all together. There is no other alternative for life on this planet but to end the reign of dirty oil. This statistic from Jack Herer’s book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” (The Hemp Bible) will blow your mind, it may bring anger and joy to you at the same time. Anger because you’ll realize how corrupt our energy system is, and joy because you will be able to see how easy changing the world can be!

Farming only 6% of U.S continental acreage with biomass crops would provide all of America’s gas and oil energy needs, ending dependence upon fossil fuels. -Manahan, Stanley E. Environmental Chemistry, 4th Edition

Now what does hemp have to do with bio mass energy you say? Well just the fact that hemp is the Earth’s # 1 source of bio mass. It can produce much more than corn and is better for the land and soil. The corn industry has the nerve to promote using corn for biomass when millions starve every day, hemp is simply the most ethical and sustainable source of bio mass period.

Above: A hemp powered car, it is real and very possible. But now to defeat the seemingly impossible tasks at hand, the end of hemp prohibition and the end of drilling of our poor Mother Earth.

Do you want to see the end of perpetual and very destructive wars for oil? Do you want to see the end of expensive and ever rising energy costs? Do you want your children and future generations to live horrible or fantastic lives? Of course we all want better for ourselves and others but how can we truly be able to win the battle if we all help perpetuate the conditions for our defeat? A better world means tough decisions and sacrifice but most off all stronger communities. Communities that go beyond religion, communities that actually take care of each other, and keep each other informed. Spread the word around like new age apostles and see what you can do yourself to stop supporting Big Oil. The fate of our species may depend on it, scratch that, our species DOES depend on it!
Peace

The longest and most expensive war in the world has been waged for almost a century, hiding under the veil of a clean, drug free America. A war based on one of the biggest lies ever, that cannabis was dangerous and inherently evil. Racism against Blacks, Hispanics and to some extent Europeans brought us into criminalizing cannabis (Corporations who dealt with petroleum and chemicals used marijuana prohibition as a way of outlawing hemp made products too). Millions have since suffered the consequences of these racist and damaging laws. The U.S, the land of the free, imprisons more of it’s citizens than anyone in the world. Private prisons making money off filling their prisons with non-violent offenders, ruining the lives of innocent people, their families and communities. They have wasted trillions of taxpayers dollars to do it when they could have housed and fed the homeless or paid for free health care. Drug use has actually gone up and there are still plenty of drugs available on the streets. That’s when you realize that the war is not on drugs, but on the people.

Current trends point to a U.S style drug war coming to the great white north. Recently the Conservative government’s Stockwell Day cites an ‘alarming’ rise in unreported crime to justify new prisons.
What do these people take us for, a bunch of fucking idiots? A rise in unreported crime? How do you catch someone if their crime is unreported? They use this as the reasoning for opening up new prisons when the actual reported crime rate has gone down overall, they use the good old getting tough on crime bullshit the DEA and D.A.R.E have been spewing for years. These new prisons our government are spending billions on are for you and I, they don’t build prisons to let them sit vacant, they intend to fill them!

How are they going to fill them up you say? Mandatory minimum sentences for drug users of course!
Bill S-10: “Penalties for organized drug crime act”, formerly known as Bill C-15 and Bill C-26, is the third and latest version of the government’s get tough on crime legislation. The Conservatives are also pushing ahead with Bill S-10 at the very moment the United States is repealing or reforming many of its own mandatory minimum drug penalties, because of mounting evidence that they don’t work. This will target people who grow 6 plants or more and put them in prison for 6 months no questions asked with the maximum penalty going up to 14 years. Check out this chart to see whats in store for drug users, growers and sellers.

Another alarming sign of the Canadian government’s march towards starting a drug war and silencing dissent was the extradition of B.C’s prince of pot Marc Emery to the U.S earlier this year. This was a strong signal of things to come with medical patients now having their plants destroyed or their medicine seized over minor violations or in some cases no reason other than to take away people’s meds. CALM being raided twice this year in Toronto and once in Quebec are other disheartening trends happening right now. Canadian cannabis users and non users alike need to really look at what our great country is heading into, a war on us, the people.
